What makes insuring a Hillman different?

What makes insuring a Hillman different?

Classic Hillman vehicles hold a special place in British motoring history. These cars were manufactured from 1907 until 1976 and represent an important chapter in the UK automotive past. From the popular Minx to the innovative Imp, Hillmans combine practicality with character in a way few other classics manage.

Their rarity makes evaluating them correctly important, while their age means parts and skilled repairs require specialist knowledge. The sentimental value these cars hold for their owners goes far beyond what standard insurers usually understand. Regular car insurance fails to understand what makes your Hillman special, which is why a specialised cover designed specifically for classic vehicles is required.

The Need

Why do you need specialist Hillman insurance?

Standard car insurance doesn’t work well for classic Hillman cars. Regular policies miss the key aspects of classic Hillman ownership, including:

  • The appreciating rather than depreciating value of these classics
  • The limited mileage typical of cherished historic vehicles
  • The care and attention Hillman owners devote to their cars
  • The specialised parts and repair considerations for vehicles that ceased production decades ago
  • The unique characteristics of different Hillman models
  • The club meets classic shows and rallies that are important to Hillman ownership
  • The historical significance that makes these cars more than just transport

Our tailored Hillman insurance honours the special place your classic holds in British motoring history while providing practical coverage for how you actually use your car.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your Hillman Insurance Questions Answered

The most common questions we're asked about Hillman insurance. Can't find what you're looking for? Speak to our UK-based team on 0800 917 2274.

Does my Hillman qualify for classic car cover?

Almost certainly. Hillman production ended in 1976, so an Imp, Minx, Hunter or Avenger is comfortably old enough for classic terms. Most insurers on our panel also want the car to be a second or third vehicle rather than a daily driver, with modest annual mileage and secure overnight parking. Tell us how you use it and we'll confirm eligibility.

Can I get limited-mileage cover for my Hillman?

Yes, and it is the route most Hillman owners take. Typical limits of 1,500, 3,000 or 5,000 miles a year suit a car that only comes out for Rootes events, summer runs and the occasional show. Pick a figure that leaves a sensible buffer for longer trips and our UK-based team will quote around it.

Can I insure my Hillman on an agreed value basis?

Agreed value cover is usually the better choice for a restored Imp Californian, Hunter GT or well-kept Minx. Glass guides do not reflect what a concours-condition Hillman costs to put right, so a settlement at book value can leave you short. Send us photos, receipts and a club valuation and we will set the sum insured at a realistic figure.

Do Hillman Owners Club or Rootes Car Club members get a discount?

Several insurers on our panel treat Hillman Owners Club and Association of Rootes Car Clubs membership as a positive underwriting sign because active members tend to look after their cars. Quote your membership number when you get in touch and we will see whether a club rate applies to your model and postcode.

Am I covered if parts take months to find during a restoration?

Rootes parts can take a while to track down, whether it is Avenger trim or Imp engine components from a club stores scheme. A specialist classic policy does not pressure you to rush a repair, and agreed value cover protects a part-restored car in storage. Let our UK-based team know the state of the project and we will arrange cover that fits that stage.

Can I get laid-up cover while my Hillman is off the road?

Yes. If your Hillman is SORN for winter or mid-restoration, laid-up cover protects against fire, theft and accidental damage in the garage at a much lower cost than full road cover. You can switch back to driving cover when the car is ready for the road. Just let us know when you want each stage to start.
