The Need

Why do I need specialist Romanian import insurance?

Standard UK car insurance policies may not provide adequate cover for Romanian-imported vehicles. This is because imported vehicles typically have different specifications from UK models, potentially higher repair costs, different valuation considerations, and special registration requirements to comply with UK regulations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your Romanian Imports Insurance Questions Answered

The most common questions we're asked about Romanian imports insurance. Can't find what you're looking for? Speak to our UK-based team on 0800 917 2274.

What paperwork do I need to insure a Romanian import?

Whether it is an early ARO 10, a pre-UK-launch Dacia or a rare Oltcit Club, insurers on our panel will usually want a UK V5C in your name, a NOVA receipt or Certificate of Conformity, an MOT or IVA pass where required, proof of purchase and evidence of any UK-market modifications. Our UK-based team will talk you through exactly what applies to your car.

How is an ARO or Oltcit valued for insurance?

Romanian classics sit outside the usual UK trade guides, so a straight market-value settlement tends to undercook them. We arrange agreed value cover backed by photos, a specialist valuation and any recent auction or invoice evidence. That way, a total loss pays a realistic figure rather than a price guide that never accounted for the car in the first place.

What does DVLA need to register a Romanian-market car in the UK?

Pre-UK-launch Dacias, ARO 24s and 10s and the Oltcit need NOVA notification within 14 days of arrival, then a registration application with HMRC import evidence, original Romanian title, MOT or IVA as age requires, and proof of identity. Once the V5C is issued in your name, we can arrange cover. A note: many ARO owners go for an age-related plate rather than a Q plate.

How do I source parts and does that affect my cover?

Parts often come from Romania itself, Poland, Germany or from a small UK-based specialist. A claim repair may wait while components are shipped across Europe, which mainstream insurers aren't set up for. Specialist policies on our panel are comfortable with longer repair windows and will authorise courtesy cover while the car is off the road.

Do older ARO and Dacia models qualify for classic car cover?

Yes. A pre-1990s ARO 10, 24 or 244, or an early Dacia 1300 saloon, almost always qualifies for classic terms: limited mileage, agreed value, secure storage and use as a second or hobby vehicle. For newer Dacias built before the brand's UK launch, we check eligibility case by case because criteria vary across insurers.

Can I get laid-up cover while my Romanian import is off the road?

Yes. If your car is waiting on DVLA registration, parts from Romania or simply tucked away for winter, laid-up cover protects against fire, theft and accidental damage at a fraction of the cost of full road cover. Let our UK-based team know when you expect the car to be back on the road and we will switch the policy over then.
